Patrick, Pat [Laurdine] (Nov 1929 - Moline, IL, 31 Dec 1991)

 

Saxophonist

 

As a child he studied piano and drums and took trumpet lessons from his father and Clark Terry; he met John Gilmore, Clifford Jordan, and Richard Davis at Du Sable High School in Chicago. He played with Sun Ra at intervals from 1954 into the 1980s, and with James Moody, John Coltrane, Cootie Williams, and Duke Ellington; in 1970 he was a member of Thelonious Monk's quartet and later he played with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra under Clifford Thornton and Grachan Moncur III. Patrick is a well-schooled versatile soloist and ensemble player and made an important contribution to Sun Ra's music. Besides his principal instrument, which is baritone saxophone, he plays flutes, bass, and percussion.
